The Prologue Day

General

The prologue day is not a separate tour, it is rather the first day of any of the other tours. The prologue day is used to compensate for skewed arrivals and to check the tour logistics. There are some options and variability in the prologue day and thus we are describing it here.

During the flight of the prologue day you will:

  • see the briefing and planning routine,
  • perform a short and easy route,
  • get the first experience with the group flying,
  • see what you need regarding luggage,
  • get some experience with flight plan and the GPS route,
  • get the first impression on the airspace,
  • hear and talk to the ATC,
  • hear some non-English gibber on the frequency.

The prologue day is the first day to enjoy the trip, not the check flight. The check flight will be performed a day earlier (or exceptionally on the same day) in the traffic circuit of the Portorož Airport. During the check flight, the pilot is accompanied by a Certified Flight Instructor, while on the prologue day, the pilot flies on his own (unless the CFI recomended use of a safety pilot - but this would happen only exceptionally).

We will select one of several possible routes for the prologue day flight depending on the available timing, weather conditions, demonstrated flight experience of the group and wishes of the participans.

Common for all options

All prologoue tours start and end in Portorož, on the coast of the Adriatic sea, yet in the heart of Europe. Portorož is by its name port of roses and evergreens, port of mediterranean aromas. Saltpans in the vicinity (just around the airport) put it on the map, but the natural elements with healing propeties as brine, salt and fango mud made it what it is today, an attractive health and holiday resort.

All prologue tours return to Portorož along the coast with a panoramic view of Piran. The town got its name from the Greek word pyr meaning fire, because the original settlement was used as a lighthouse. Piran has a well preserved medieval town core fitted on a small peninsula. It has a small, but impressive port and some lovely facades showing strong Venetian influence. We will complete the day with a dinner in one of the Piran restaurants serving the local seafood and a late walk through the medieval city.

Option 1: Portorož - Postojna and back to Portorož

Leave the coastline and fly over Kras, the limestone (karst) region adorned with vinyards and small stone houses. Land in Postojna to visit the phenomena of the Karst underworld. Postojna Cave is a network of passages and galleries abundant in unbelievable limestone formations. Besides the spectacular stalagmites and stalactites, Postojna Cave is also the home of Proteus anguinus – the rare human fish.

Option 2: Portorož - Venice and back to Portorož

We will cross the Gulf of Trieste, leaving on the right port of Koper, city of Trieste and overflying Grado, a small fishing town almost completely surrounded by shalow seas. We will leave the Aeroporto Ronchi dei Legionari far on the right and fly along the Italian Adriatic Golden Sand Riviera (Sabbiadoro) over well known tourist spots like Lignano, Caorle and Jesolo. We will land at Venezia Lido San Nicolo Airport, a small grass strip on an island Lido di Venezia oposing the Venetian old city. We will board the Vapporeto, the Venetian public transportation boat and take a trip along the waterways of the old City. After a short walk through less touristic parts of Venice we will have a quick lunch at one of the hidden authentic restaurants in the City. Using Vaporetto again, we will return to the Airport and fly back to Portorož along the same route.

Option 3: Portorož - Ajdovščina and back to Portorož

We will fly inland over the Karst shelf. An impressive highway bridge will be the landmark to exit Portorož CTR. We will overfly the Škocijan cave, a Unesco natural heritage monument with a natural bridge carved by undergroun waters. Further to the North we will turn West over village Razdrto into Vipava Valley, a place where Mediteranean climate comes to its most inland place. We will land in Ajdovščina, an airport with active gliding community. Right on the airport is a small ultralight airplane factory, Pipistrel. Pipistrel won two NASA Personal Air Vehicle Competitions with its ultralight designs. We can have a tour through the factory and (most likely) have a conversation with the owner Ivo Boscarol. We will have a lunch in one of the local restaurants and return to Portorož through Italy. We will most likely overfly Trieste Ronchi dei legionari Airport and then head to Piran passing Grado, a pitoresque fishing village build almost in the middle of the water.

Option 3: Portorož - Vrsar and back to Portorož

We will fly along the coast of the Istrian peninsula overflying most of the well known Istrian tourist resorts. Close to Vrsar the coast is embraced in large number of small islets. In the traffic circuit of Vrsar airport we will overfly an interesting fjord like channel reaching almost 10 miles inland. A slightly extended downwind for runway 01 would lead us to Rovinj, amother medieval city giving a unique view of he houses directly on shore. We will land in Vrsar and take a short trip to the city of Vrsar. Depending on the temperatures and wether wa may take a swimming hour or just walk through the old city. After a lunch in one of the local restaurants we will head back to the airport and fly back along the same route, this time extending it to overfy Piran.
